Solar System Installation JSA

JSA, JHA, THA, JSEA or a JHA?

What’s the difference?

A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) also known as a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), or Task Hazard Analysis (THA), Job Safety and Environemtal Analysis (JSEA) or a Safe Work Method Statement (JHA) in essence are all the same thing.

They all have 3 main elements:

  1. Job Step (What are you going to do)
  2. Potential Hazard (What can go wrong or cause harm)
  3. Control measure (What are you going to do to make sure it doesn’t go wrong or cause harm)

A JSEA also considers the environmental hazards/ impacts and controls.

No matter what you call it, The JSEAsy safety Management Software creates a report with the terminology of your choosing.

The main objective of a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is to identify potential hazards before they lead to harm, ensuring that tasks are completed safely.
When you configure your JSEAsy defaults, the text on the buttons and in the reports will automatically adjust to reflect your chosen settings

People often ask, “Can I have a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for installing solar energy systems?” “A document that covers everything?”  The answer is not really. Well, you could create a document that covers most areas of the solar and electrical work, but it would be hundreds of pages long and would contain more items that did not apply to your project, than items that did.

A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) needs to document step by step how you are going to do a particular job. Not all jobs are the same! Are you going to install solar panels to a domestic pitched roofed residence or a flat roof multi story building?

Are you going to pass up your support framework and panels by hand, or load them into a scissor lift and transfer to the roof? Maybe you will use a crane to lift up all of your materials.

Are you going to access the roof via a ladder or a scaffold, or maybe from a scissor lift or a boom lift? Perhaps the solar panels are being installed onto framework on the ground.

The steps in undertaking each of these tasks are very different. Not only are the steps different, but the potential hazards and the hazard control measures are very different as well.
Ensure constant positive communication with co-workers when passing up solar panels and accessories.

When installing solar systems, it’s crucial to priorities safety.

Use correct manual handling procedures when lifting solar panels to avoid Muscle strain - musculoskeletal disorders.
Installing Solar panels with the risk of falling more than 2 meters is high-risk construction work.

Solar system installers encounter various safety hazards while performing their work.

Fall from Heights

• Unprotected Edges: Roof edges without guardrails or fall protection.
• Fragile Surfaces: Skylights, holes, or vents that can give way under weight.
• Weather Conditions: Wind, rain, or slippery surfaces.
• Trip Hazards: Roof components, protrusions, or uneven surfaces.
• Steep Pitched Roofs: Risk of overbalancing or losing grip.

Electrical Hazards:

• Working near live electrical wires or installations.
• Using electric leads and power tools

Extreme Temperatures:

• Roof work exposes workers to heat and sunlight.
• Heat stress, sunburn, and dehydration.

Manual Tasks and Heavy Lifting:

• Carrying roofing materials and equipment can result in muscle strain – musculoskeletal disorders.
• Back injury
• Repetitive strain Injury (RSI)

A JHA provides a clear, step-by-step guide on how to perform a task safely.

It ensures that everyone involved understands the necessary steps, reducing the likelihood of accidents due to confusion or misunderstanding.

The JSEAsy Safety Management Software builds your site-specific JHA for your solar installation job by adding templates of the steps you are going to take, in the order in which you are going to take them.

Watch a detailed demonstration video on how to create a new site-specific JHA using existing templates.

Making JHA has never been easier, just pick your job steps and the JSEAsy safety management software does all the hard work for you.

The hierarchy of controls prioritizes eliminating hazards, then using substitutions, engineering controls, administrative actions, and finally personal protective equipment.
A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) identifies and mitigates risks, ensuring worker safety by systematically evaluating job tasks for potential hazards.
