Cleaning Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)
People often ask, “Can I have a Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) for Cleaning?” “A document that covers everything?” The answer is not really.
A Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) needs to document step by step how you are going to do a particular job. Not all jobs are the same! Are you going to clean a bathroom or polish a floor?
The steps in undertaking each of these tasks are very different. Not only are the steps different, but the potential hazards and the hazard control measures are very different as well.

Cleaning work involves various hazards due to the nature of the tasks.

- Chemical Exposure: Cleaning agents and chemicals used in the industry can pose health risks if not handled properly. Skin irritation, respiratory problems, and other health issues can arise from exposure to these substances.
- Slips, Trips, and Falls: Wet floors, spilled cleaning solutions, and cluttered work areas can contribute to slips, trips, and falls. This is a common hazard in the cleaning industry, and it’s important for workers to wear slip-resistant footwear and use warning signs.
- Musculoskeletal Injuries: Repetitive tasks, lifting heavy objects, and awkward postures can lead to musculoskeletal injuries. Workers may experience strains, sprains, or other ergonomic-related issues.
- Equipment Hazards: The use of cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and power washers can pose risks if not used properly. Inadequate training or malfunctioning equipment can lead to accidents.
- Biological Hazards: Cleaning areas with potential biological contaminants, such as mold, bacteria, or viruses, can expose workers to health risks. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and training are essential in dealing with biological hazards.
- Sharp Objects: Broken glass, sharp edges, or other objects can cause injuries if not handled carefully. Workers should be cautious when dealing with sharp objects and use appropriate protective gear.
- Noise Exposure: Some cleaning equipment, such as industrial vacuum cleaners or power washers, can generate high levels of noise. Prolonged exposure to loud noises can lead to hearing loss, so using hearing protection is important.
- Electrical Hazards: Working with electrical equipment, such as floor scrubbers or carpet cleaners, poses a risk of electric shock if not used properly or if equipment is faulty.
- Workplace Violence: Cleaning personnel may work alone or during off-hours, increasing the risk of encountering unsafe situations or potential violence. Employers should implement safety protocols and provide training to minimize these risks.
- Respiratory Hazards: Dust, particulate matter, or chemical fumes generated during cleaning activities can pose respiratory hazards. Proper ventilation and the use of respiratory protection may be necessary.
A SWMS provides a clear, step-by-step guide on how to perform a task safely.
