Safe Work Methos Statements (SWMS)

Creating a safe work method statement is an important step in creating a safer work environment. It helps identify potential hazards and develop strategies to eliminate or reduce them. By doing so, you can improve workplace communication, eliminate hazards, train new employees, increase productivity, and reduce costs.

A SWMS is a written document that sets out the high-risk work activities to be carried out at a workplace, the hazards and risks arising from these activities and the measures to be put in place to control the risks. Its primary purpose is to help supervisors and workers implement and monitor the control measures established at the workplace to ensure high risk work is carried out safely.

The key reasons for completing a SWMS are to encourage teamwork (especially with new employees), to involve everyone performing the job in the process, and to elevate awareness!

A Safe Operating Procedures (SOP) or Safe Work Procedures (SWP) sometimes also known as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
